This study investigated on cooling characteristics of AC4C aluminum alloy casting material and AC7A aluminum alloy casting material using gravity casting method for manufacturing automobile tire mold by experiment and numerical analysis. The temperature distribution and the cooling time of the materials were measured by experiment, and the results from the experiment were compared each other for the investigation of their cooling characteristic.
The displacement and the stress distribution of the materials were calculated by numerical analysis, and the results from the analysis were compared each other, and also the results of the experiment and the numerical analysis were compared each other. The experimental set up for measuring temperature and cooling time consisted of the casting, the metal mold device, data acquisition unit, nine K-type thermocouples and PC. For the numerical analysis, “COMSOL Multiphysics 3.3 Ver”, the commercial code based on the finite element method, was used for the prediction of displacement and stress distribution. As results of experiment, the cooling time of AC7A casting material was faster than cooling time of AC4C casting material about 20 minutes. Also, when casting was separated from permanent mold device, AC7A casting material was faster than AC4C casting material about 10 minutes by separating time. When the results from the numerical analysis were compared each other, the displacement of AC7A casting material was higher than the displacement of AC4C casting material about 1.7㎜, and the stress of AC7A casting material was higher than the stress of AC4C casting material about 0.1㎬.
