The purpose of this study is to analyze mythological aspects of Woncheongang bonpuri and to examine its modern adaptation.
Woncheongang bonpuri was adapted from various genres such as fairy tales, picture books, and animation, mainly targeting children. The studies of Woncheongang bonpuri, however, are rarely conducted.
The reason is that it is hard to study Woncheongang bonpuri because Woncheongang bonpuri was transcribed into only two text documents and it is not used anymore in Korean shamanist rituals(gut), therefore, basic resources to study are not enough. Furthermore, since the two documents show totally different contexts but the same title, many researchers cast doubt on the authenticity of Woncheongang bonpuri as a bonpuri. Hyun Yong-jun considered Woncheongang bonpuri as a folk tale not a shamanist epic.
Owing to the lack of basic research on Woncheongang bonpuri, this study, first of all, analyzed whether Woncheongang bonpuri is a shamanist epic or not. Between two documents, Park Bong-chun’s copy was considered as an original copy since it seems to have more plausibility. By comparing the narrative of Park’s copy to that of Fortune Quest’s folktale, I tried to verify that Woncheongang bonpuri is a shamanist epic not a folktale. Through this analysis, Woncheongang bonpuri’s own mythological aspects were found out.
After describing mythological aspects of Woncheongang bonpuri, I have examined its modern adaptation in fairy tales, picture books, andanimation. It was conducted based on three books, such as fairy tales of Yoo Young-so and Choroakin, and Lee Sung-gang’s animation.
In the fairly tales and the picture books, it was focused that whether mythological aspects of Woncheongang bonpuri are clearly shown and whether it is proper to target children. The mythological aspects of Woncheongang bonpuri were mostly deleted and the original narrative and the meaning were changed to educate children.
In the animation, it was examined that how Woncheongang bonpuri as a shamanist epic has been changed to adjust itself to modern people who live their lives regardless of shamanism. The animation substituted happiness which is an appropriate code for modern people for the original theme.
