Kangnung Nongak is an important intangible cultural treasure designated by the government. In consideration of its significance as a major folk art to this extent, Kangnung citizens might have the responsibility to refine and polish it before handing it down to their next generation. The Dana Festival of Kangnung, which is also a primary intangible cultural property authorized by the government, has grown to world recognized historic asset. Independently and widely performed by many people, Kangnung Nongak is loved by even more people especially during the Dana Festival period to the extent that Kangnung Dano Festival without Kangnung Nongak is unimaginable.
However, its behind story reveals somewhat different aspects. The Dano Festival in Kangnung has been grown on a strong foundation for transmission to its reputation through a countless number of academic survey reports but Kangnung Nongak, of which principles have been inclined to only the practicing of its arts, has been ignored in term of its academic development, as this study shows.
As far as Kangnung Nongak concerned, we must get out this kind of attitude to ignore its academic significance, at least in order to reestablish its standing and secure its identity. Tradition can probably be defined as an organism that lives on the sprit of an era. The officers concerned with this matter of tradition might have to make more of an effort in leading Kangnung Nongak to a new era based on the past traditions, by taking deep consideration of today’s messages it delivers.
