This study aims to understand the makeup design for Korean traditional dress called Hanbok (herein after Hanbok) and provides basic information to illuminate and revitalize Hanbok makeup. As a methodology to carry this study, the characteristic of Hanbok makeup design and makeup trends of the 1990s and 2000s have been researched by focusing on related prior researches. A total of 648 Hanbok makeup pictures and 6 makeup pictures were used as materials to analyse applying colors, shapes and textures on skin, eyes, cheek, and mouth. The result of this study is as follows. First, the design characteristic of Hanbok can be divided into elements of color, shape, and texture. Second, in the 1990s, people adapted contemporary fashion shapes and colors for Hanbok makeup design. In the 2000s, there was an attempt to harmonize Hanbok dress according to makeup trends which provide a soft and natural skin tone, emphasize eyes or makes them delicate with pinky colored eye shadow, gives soft and light cheek makeup and mouth makeup. Brown, orange, pink and red typed colors were generally used for Hanbok makeup. As briefly stated above, we can understand that Hanbok makeup has been experienced with diverse ways in accordance with contemporary makeup trends.
