The ground of doing theology is love, and faith seeking understanding(fides querens intellectum). We seek understanding in order to love, that is, to love God and His people. According to the Gospels, mission is the triune God’s mission for which the church is being sent. The motive of mission is God’s love(John 3:16). Missio dei goes hand in hand with agape dei. Therefore, we can say that theology is essentially a missionary theology, and the church is by its very substance missionary.
In doing mission, understanding peoples and cultures is a basic element in the communication of the gospel. In order to understand cultures, we have to overcome all kinds of walls and barriers, such as customs, languages, values, world views, etc. Here the right understanding of the relationship between the gospel and culture is at issue. Culture can be seen as either a barrier or a channel for the communication of the gospel. The central issue of doing mission lies on the fact that culture must be applied as a channel for the communication of the gospel, yet it often functions as a barrier and is always under change. So, missiological reflection and insights are needed on the problem of the relationship between gospel and culture.
In this thesis, I will handle the issue of gospel and culture missiologically by presenting a case of Jeju Island’s Guendang: a special kinship of community that festers solidarity. The method of this study is based on the cultural theology of creative tension. Here the cultural theology of creative tension stands for the process of contextualization of the gospel(text) in the relevant culture(context), becoming the local theology(Christianity), which is in turn proclaimed to another culture(context). The cultural theology of creative tension sees the gospel and culture in the process of permanent hermeneutical cycle. It consists of 4 steps: grasping and analysis, research of the biblical teachings, reflection and evaluation, and making of a new variation of contextualized Christian through identification, separation(discard), and/or transformation. Jeju’ Guendang cultural traits like kinship call, solidarity of religion, family, and work are to be identified with the gospel. Elements of ancestral worship like deification of ancestors, writing ancestral paper tablets, and making obeisance are to be discarded. Some good elements of the ancestral worship in Guendang(like filial piety) are to be continued and transformed as a part of Christian life style within that culture. The cultural theology of creative tension should be applied by the hermeneutical community of churches both in the local and global context and by all the members of the church clergy and laity, theologian and minister, native people and missionary.
