Compared to other Korean thinkers, Suh Nam Dong could be evaluated as a theologian who responds to his surrounding context more comprehensively and consciously. Such an ethical response enables Suh’s ethics to claim more authentic public accountability. Considering the given situation of the 1970’s and 1980’s in Korea, Suh’s appeal for solidarity to participate in the suffering of the minjung can be evaluated as contextually relevant and accountable. His radical concern on the submerged and forgotten minjung stories in Korean history is an awakening call to some theologians who unconsciously or consciously ignore their own stories.
However Suh’s arguments still leave some serious questions. First of all, a question of Suh’s view of God and Jesus can be raised. Although Suh admits the presence of God as the object to our prayers, his radical immanent view of God makes us question the relationship between his argument for minjung as subjects of history and the traditional argument for the primacy of God’s action. And Suh’s argument for the de-personalization of Jesus leads us to the fundamental debate over the perennial question: Who is Jesus Christ?
Though there is a undeniable contribution of Suh’s minjung ethics to the Korean context during 1970’s through 1980’s, it follows a fundamental question of it as a responsible ethics with regards to the interpretation: Is Suh’s exclusive argument for the interpretation from the minjung perspective really accountable to the Korean culture and the contemporary context? While to a great degree, Suh’s interpretation of the history based upon dualistic view, i.e., the oppressor vs. the oppressed, is accountable in a certain context, however it is questionable that it can maintain its accountability in this so called postmodern age.
