The main purpose of this study is to analyze the income effect of the project of developing national fishing port (hereafter, Project of DNFP) in Korea. For the empirical study, we collected a panel data set whose variables are the income level, the value of fishing amount and the year when the observed fishing port became the national one. The data period is from 1989 to 2004 and the number of the observed fishing ports is 388.
According to the analysis, as a whole, Project of DNFP has been effective on raising the income. However, there appears different results on the two aspects, one is regional and the second is periodic. First, on the regional aspect, Project of DNFP has been effective in such regions as Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, Chungnam, Kangwon, but not effective in such regions as Gyeonggi, Incheon, Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, Jeju. Second, on the periodic aspect, Project of DNFP has become less effective during the project period. Although the statistical significance is poor, the sign of the effectiveness has appeared negative since 2000. As a result, we recommend that the government should modify the way how Project of DNFP is conducted.
