During the Japanese rule, Lee Neung Hwa wrote A History of Korean Daoism(朝鮮道敎史) in Chinese(漢文) which was published in 1959 and translated into Korean by Lee Jong Eun(李鍾殷) in 1977. Nowadays most scholars who studies Korean Daoism refer to the frame and contents of A History of Korean Daoism. So we have to understand the Concept on Koeran Daoism of Lee Neung Hwa to broad and deep the study of Korean Daoism.
I focused on the two key words namely the true Daoism(眞正道敎) and the sect of immortal(仙 派) in the A History of Korean Daoism to analyse the concepts on Korean Daoism of Lee Neung Hwa. True Daoism means not only Chinese Daoism which was adopted by Korean government through Korean history, also Daoism which was performed the Daoist ritual in Korea. Lee Neung Hwa regarded true Daoim as Daoism of state, did not Daoism of people. This imply that Daoim of Korea was to be a Daoism of people.
Lee Neung Hwa emphasized the sect of Immortal in his book. Lee insisted that the Sect of Immortal was originated by heaven god Hwanin(桓因) who was the grand father of a builder of Korean state Dangun(擅君). According to the Lee"s insistence, Korean Daoism traced back to the heaven god Hwanin, and influenced on the formation of Chinese Daoism. This insistence emphasize the identity or Korean to overcome the annihilation of Japanese colonial government during the Taoanese rule.
Although Lee Neung Hwa emphasized Daoism of people, Lee hesitated that people had a power to take real steps to open new society. So he criticized the new religions which appeared at last phase of Chosen Dynasty(草月鮮王卓月).
