Recently, many people with disabilities are using various assistive technology devices to overcome their disability or improve their lost function. Such devices give many advantages to the disabled person but is not completely suitable to use when they purchase it in the beginning. It is because almost of these devices are produced with standardization form. Therefore, almost of the assistive devices must be fitted to the person with disability who are the user of it. Exactly, the devices are modified to the size of the user, disability type, disability condition, living environment and so on. Generally, these fitting processes are expressed as the assistive technology service.
The purpose of this study was to provide a person with physically disabilities who uses powered wheelchair with assistive technology service adding the speech recognition function to the wheelchair and to verify the effectiveness. It was designed that the remodeled wheelchair have two working mode - joystick and voice recognition. The working mode is determined by the pushing the selection switch by the user. To add the voice recognition function to the wheelchair, a control unit which included a PIC micro-controller and a output adjustment circuit was designed. A voice recognition and synthesis chip, and a headset were modified to be used in the device.
