This article tries to examine the significance of qualitative methodology for research on human rights of North Korean women. Firstly, North Korean women’s human rights are characteristically constituted in the course of whole life times. From this point of view, qualitative methodology provides the possibility to overcome limitations of the research frame, in which human rights are easily reduced to a ‘happening’ attributed to a certain life time. Secondly, the violations of human rights of North Korean women, e.g. through bought marriages, forced prostitution, sexual violence etc., are segmented and somatized, so that they cannot be verbalized. To reconstruct this ‘hidden’ violation of human rights, qualitative methodology can offer an apt alternative. Thirdly, qualitative methodology, with its attention to the actor, tries to understand the action-orientation of North Korean women, who, despite the cruel reality, perform a specific longing for dignity as human beings. Fourthly, through the reconstruction of life experiences within the biographical context, qualitative methodology can be an important way to understand the violation of human rights of North Korean women beyond nationalism.
