This study examines the process of English verbal morphology acquisition by Korean learners, particularly the simple past and the present perfect to provide an understanding of L2 acquisition of the temporal system. This study focused on the test of the Aspect Hypothesis and discovered areas of difficulty related to lexical aspect in the learning of English verbal morphology. The subjects were Korean junior college students enrolled in the basic English writing class and the data were collected through a cloze-type test. The study performed here confirmed the Aspect Hypothesis in which lexical aspect influences the acquisition of verbal morphology. The results show that the acquisition of tense-aspect morphology proceeds in stages as it is related to lexical aspect. As for the present perfect, which is concerned with complex semantic features and L1 differences, the results of the test were not consistent with those of the simple past. In addition, the learners demonstrated far less proficiency in the present perfect compared with the simple past. The results also indicate the importance of acquisition order and readiness in the learning of the present perfect.
