This study aims to speculate changes in and distribution of senses and functions of the taste brought by travelling, focusing on senses recorded in 『Nogajaeyeonheng Diary』, in particular, senses of Joseon migrants and food as a cultural meaning recorded by Kim Chang-up.
First of all, the study examined how Joseon people who voluntarily stayed or were compelled to stay in Qing Dynasty lived there and what meaning their life style had. Also it analysed what position their senses had and what senses mediated migrants and Joseon delegates. The results of the study will help understand what role Joseon migrants played in exchanges between China and Korea and social values of migrants. They will be a clue for diachronic study on senses recorded in the diary and migration in considering that the present is t1le age of migration.
Then, based on information on food, what function food had in exchanges between both countries and how Kim Chang-up felt about the taste were identified. Through the results, a possibility to extract the cultural meaning of the taste from the diary will be found.
What role delegation as an official diplomatic way played in distribution of Joseon’s senses can be discovered.
It is interesting to find issues of distribution, consumption and commercialization of senses through migration in the diary. The issue of senses is the point of contact where the past meets the present in that migration has kept existing.
