??Both canons and classics have the highest authority. However, the nature of their authority and the way in which they demonstrate such authority are very different. Canons declare by themselves that they are absolute truth transcending time and space. The authority of canon is strengthened by social institutions such as the state. Canons controlled people’s minds in traditional societies. Classics, however, are the product of modern society and do not claim that they are absolute truth. Classics are not the container of truth but that of cultural value, and their values should be recognized by public readers. Classics pursue universality, but it is historical and relative universality.
??Traditional Buddhist texts were recognized as canons until the advent of modern society. This is also the case in Korean society. In the twenty century, as Korean society was modernized in many ways, people looked at Buddhist texts from a different perspective. Some Buddhist texts are recognized among the public not as canon, as it were absolute truth, but as classics. Most of these classics are the writings of Korean monks. This has to do with cultural nationalism that is very common among modern states. Modern states needed cultural identity, and find their own classics in order to satisfy that need. Korean Buddhist writings are recognized as comprising the cultural identity in Korea.
