Machiavelli"s celebrato sogno, in which he hoped to stay in hell discussing politics with ancient wise men rater than live a boring life with good but ignorant people in heaven, could include a clue to the real political ideal he dreamed of but never realized true. Many scholars have tried to solve the question or enigma of Machiavelli of how the author of The Prince, which appears to advise arcana imperii, became at the same time the author of the Discourse expressing the classical republicanism. In this paper, I will show that Machiavelli"s real dream or political ideal was the glory and greatness of the state, not merely a type of republic or princedom. In this sense, his dream is deeply related to the dream of Scipio as told by Cicero.
