The King Jinheung’s Sunsu Memorial Stones draw attention as the first epitaph named with a term Sunsu (巡ettKing’s tour around the country). It means political changes and territorial expansion of Silla King Jinheung and has symbolic meanings as well which directly show a leap forward to the next level. Though 〈Changnyoung Memorial Stone〉 used to be included in King Jinheung’s Sunsu Memorial Stones, this study only examines the stones which have ‘Sunsu’ in their names, which are 〈Bukhansan Sunsu Memorial Stone〉, 〈Hwangchoryeong Sunsu Memorial Stone〉 and 〈Maunryeong Sunsu Memorial Stone〉.
There have been numerous arguments on the time of erecting King Jinheung’s Sunsu Memorial Stones and their contents. Compared to the existing studies, however, there are many unargued issues such as how they should be considered from the perspective of calligraphic history, whether chirographies of the three are identical, whether there was only one calligrapher if the chirographies are distinct from one another and whether the time of erecting the three varies if patterns, contents and chirographies are different.
King Jinheung’s Sunsu Memorial Stones were placed by reflecting calligraphic culture of Silla and they are a turning point of Silla’s calligraphy. Discussions on King Jinheung’s Sunsu Memorial Stones have mainly been on the time of their erection and the arguments mainly are theories of erection in the year of 555, 568 and post-568. These arguments, however, have limitations that they only admit and accept some parts of the records of King Jinheung’s tour in the 16th year of his regime and his visit to Namcheongunju (南川軍主) in the 29th year. By comparison, this study totally acknowledges records of King Jinheung’s tour in the 16th year and the visit to Namcheongunju in the 29th year and interprets the differences in records as a result of recording facts in the 16th year on the post-29th basis. In this context, this study can overcome limitations of the existing theories and considers that the theory of post-568 has validity.
