This study aimed to examine and compare the linguistic features of Korean middle school English textbook listening scripts using Coh-Metrix, a Web-based computer tool that automatically analyzes text and discourse with a wide range of linguistic and psycholinguistic measures at a deep level. We compared eight textbooks in terms of nineteen measures under four different categories: basic counts, lexical complexity, syntactic complexity, and discourse coherence. The results showed the listening texts were constructed with fairly easy vocabulary and grammatical structures. Yet, in terms of vocabulary use and text organization, the level of discourse coherence for the listening texts was not satisfactory, lacking common features found in ordinary conversations. Furthermore, although the textbooks that were developed following the same criteria and guideline are believed to share similar linguistic features in general terms, careful comparison of the textbooks revealed that considerable difference existed in all aspects of text features. These results indicate that the process of textbook development lacks specific guidelines as well as an evaluating tool to control linguistic features of text materials. In this regard, it is hoped that the results from this study would help shed more light on EFL textbook development, evaluation, and use in Korea.
