The number of fatal and injury traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers have nearly tripled in the last decade, and more than 40% of the traffic fatalities are by such accidents. Some of the elderly drivers have serious dementia, and recently, increasing number of car accidents by such drivers is becoming a serious social problem.Dementia is an intractable disorder of memory and judgment ability, which prevents people from proper social lives. It was possible to slow down the progress of dementia by medicine if the disorder is detected in an early stage. In this paper, we propose a method for screening those drivers in an early stage by measuring their driving performance and them with characteristics of dementia drivers using a driving simulator for elderly drivers. We describe the detail of the simulator and method for screening those people in an early stage by measuring their driving performance, and show results of the experiments we conducted for some elderly drivers.
