Articulated hand gesture recognition is much studied due to increasing interest on application of Human-Computer-Interaction. Generally, model-based approach has been used for hand gesture recognition because the movement of human hand presents motion of high degrees of freedom (DOF). However, there is matching problem for hand model with input image. In this paper, we introduce a simple model of cardboard model to avoid the difficulty of matching problem. First, we extract the hand area and edge of the hand, and then perform distance transform to use the hand shape information for matching real hand with the model. In the next procedure chamfer matching is applied to the model. The cardboard model is composed of 16 parts for presenting a human hand and each part has parameters expressing position, rotation and scale of fingers. We find the reference pose model which resembles RMS value obtained by chamfer matching. The DOF of the hand is constrained with linked structure of palm and fingers. Simple database for the hand model of back, palm, and individual finger are used. Each model has an edge feature and it is used for calculating chamfer distance which presents the difference of distance between edge of input image and the cardboard model. This method chooses the most similar reference model. Therefore, we can estimate the information for very complicate hand pose and motion.
