The purpose of this study is The purpose of this study is to investigate the types and usages of the expressions of regional discrimination which appear in social network services (SNS), and to analyze the background and facts of those use. Especially, we collect the data of discrimination expressions in the Twitter which is one of the most typical SNS. In chapter 2, we classify the types of the expressions of regional discrimination in terms of the target region and the time of the occurrence of them. In chapter 3, we present the usages and contexts of use of discrimination expressions, and identify the sociolinguistic distribution of them. The main results of analyzing are as follows.
First, there are many expressions against Gyeongsang region such as ‘gaessangdo’(개쌍도), ‘mundung-i’(문둥이), and ‘godamdaegu’(고담대구), and many expressions against Jeolla region such as ‘jeolladieon’(전라디언), ‘kkaengkkaeng-i’(깽깽이), and ‘hongeojok’(홍어족). Second, the expressions such as ‘gamjabawi’(감자바위), ‘mundung-i’, and ‘hatbaji’(핫바지) are used since times before 1970s, but the expressions ‘gwamegi’(과메기), ‘gwangjwiseuteu’(광쥐스트), and ‘jeolladieon’ are made and used in the 2000s by the younger generation. Third, the expressions of regional discrimination are used negatively in political context for attacking other local people or political opponents. However, some netizens use those expressions positively or neutrally for fun or identification of themselves without intent of discrimination. Fourth, ‘gaessangdo’ one of representative expression against Gyeongsang is used heavily by the men in their 20s to 40s who are opposition supporters, but ‘jeolladieon’ one of representative expression against Jeolla is used a lot
by the men in their 20s to 40s who are supporters of the ruling party. In addition, ‘jeolladieon’ is used more by the opposition supporters in a defensive motive from the supporters of the ruling party. We point out the need for follow-up studies for reducing the use of the discrimination expressions and its negative impact.
