This study was planned to develop a vocabulary memorizing program and to examine its effects on Korean EFL elementary students’ vocabulary size. We developed two vocabulary memorizing programs (self-directed and other-provided) depending on each group"s learning preferences: Self-regulated students like self-directed trial-and-error and other-regulated students prefer to follow other-provided, pre-planned procedures. Thirty-three elementary students participated in this study. Nineteen students learned new English words with the matching programs (self-regulated students with the self-directed program and other-regulated students with the other-provided program) while 14 students with the opposite programs (self-regulated students with the other-provided program and other-regulated students with the self-directed program). In order to examine the effects of the programs on their vocabulary size, we compared the means and standard deviations of the pre-tests and post-tests of the two spaced presentations and conducted regression analyses by group. We assumed that those with the self-directed program would memorize more words than those with the other-provided program and that those with the matching programs would perform better than those with the opposite programs. In contrast to our expectations, however, the participants’ preferences played more important role in their performance than the types of vocabulary memorizing programs and those with the opposite programs maintained more words through the two spaced presentations than those with the matching programs. Also, the final vocabulary size of the opposite group had significant relationships with their performance at the second pre-test. More detailed results and discussions of the findings are given.
