This study aims to identify the relationship between urban sprawl and commuting pattern. In specific, this study focuses on the analysis of the effect of urban sprawl on the commuting pattern that has negatively affected urban environment. Using a mobility impact index with 2010 commuting data from Korea Census, this study quantifies the impact of commuting for Seoul metropolitan area, and investigates the effect of urban sprawl on the mobility impact. In order to deal with the spatial autocorrelation, this study employed spatial error model. Our empirical results show that urban sprawl affects urban mobility impact, which means urban sprawl increases commuting pattern associated with higher vehicle use and longer commute. In order to resolve the negative effect of urban sprawl on commuting, this study suggests that an effective land use policy which considers not only providing affordable housings, but also connecting to transportation and employment policies is needed.
