This study is aimed to develop a STEAM-based environmental education program about effective micro-organisms (EM) which is emerging as an alternative for solving environmental problems, and to examine EM-related knowledge and levels of environmental literacy of students in the sixth grade of J elementary school in J city by applying it to them. When applying the STEAM program and traditional class to the experimental group and the control group, respectively, the experimental group got higher scores in the EM-related knowledge test than the control group. According to the result of the environmental literacy test, the experimental group was also more significantly influenced by the program in the areas of environmental knowledge and emotion than the control group. In addition, the experimental group showed a high preference for the activities to make environment-friendly products. In the survey after program application that evaluated only in the experimental group, they displayed a desire to use environment-friendly products in daily lives. Thus, it is supposed that the developed program positively affected on students’ habits to develop environment-friendly behaviors. In conclusion, it is considered that it would be possible to have positive effects on the improvement of environmental literacy of elementary school students by seeking an additional plan linked with school, family and society for development of various STEAM-based environmental education programs and continued operation of environmental education programs in the educational field.
