The Religions Affairs Office(RAO) in Korea tries to handle the administrative affairs for religions, and to make a contribution to the harmony through mutual exchange and cooperation among religions. The purpose of this study, in this situation, is to valuate and to suggest tasks of policy for religions in Korea, focusing on RAO of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism(MCST).
To achieve these purposes, in the 1nd. chapter, I point out that religions can be official agenda of the nation, though the current constitution of Korea expressly states the principle of separation of religion and politics. In the 2nd. chapter, histories and limits of policy for religions in Korea was analyzed.
In the 3rd. chapter, investigating policy for religions of other ministries and local governments of Korean government, I point out RAO can`t be a center policy for religions because it is so fragmented. In the 4th. chapter, classifying many types of nations on the basis of policy for religions, I point out Korea belongs to the second type. This leads to the inescapable conclusion that RAO is not historical, but intrinsical government bureau.
The tasks of policy for religions in Korea may be summarized as follows: ①political equality between religious groups, ②function to handle various policies for religions, and ③ function to promote transparency of administrative affairs for religions, and to enhance the professionalism of the staff.
