The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of the Korean spoken language by the registers. For this study, we compare the public discourse and private discourse in the Sejong spoken corpus using key words analysis. ‘Key words’ is a term for statistically significant lexical items which are most frequent in a given corpus compared with another corpus as a reference (Scott 1997). Moreover, we extend the keyness concept to morphemes and combinations of morphemes for analyzing Korean. WordSmith Tools offers three procedures (key words, key categories and key clusters) to select the elements from texts that are noteworthy in a statistical sense. Finding these key words, key categories, and key clusters could help to offer empirical data for the comparison of registers in the Korean spoken language.
