The purpose of this study was to examine some of the right future directions for classical literature in preparation for national reunification, as it"s desperately required for both South Korea and North Korea to be ready for national reunification in this field. To find the homogeneity of the two Koreas in classical literature, it seems necessary to look at mutual reality from the perspective of others. In the North, classical literature was viewed as a means to propagate socialism and communism and edify North Korean people. As the North intended to advocate its regime, the people and the working classes, classical literature had nothing to do with contemporary ideology, just seeking after socialistic realism and Juche idea. Even literature of the past ages was taken advantage of as a political or philosophical instrument, and the history of classical literature was dominated by materialistic thought. As far as classical literature is concerned, the South cannot be evaluated favorably, either. In South Korea, classical literature isn"t regarded as the fruit of cultural heritage any more. Classical literature is no longer considered to be worth discussing as the embodiment of national spirits along with the spread of globalism and capitalistic values. Yet it can never be denied that classical literature is one of sure ways to confirm the unity and homogeneity of the two Koreas. In this study, several topics were discussed to step up encounter between the South and the North: the excavation and arrangement of materials, overcoming colonial consciousness and the rediscovery of women"s literature. National reunification should no longer be regarded as what is only likely to take place in the distant future. Both nations should join forces to remove the deep-rooted idea that South and North Koreans look at each other just as others, and classical literature is expected to serve as a useful medium to confirm inter-Korean unity in that course.
