In general, North Korean classical literature is closely related to contemplations on national characteristics. It is because classical literature designates the works reflecting national sentiments and feelings. So a question raised from here would be what are the national characteristics. The national characteristics reflected in North Korean classical literature are those interpreted from the socialist point of view. In North Korea, only the works reflecting national characteristics prescribed by the regime are selected as classical literature, and the selected works are updated and tuned to the Juche realistic principles of party orientations, peoplecentered minds, and class inclinations based on the Juche Ideology. Since the classical literature of North Korea has been embellished through this process, it is usually accompanied by the qualifier of ‘North Korean style.’
Understanding this ‘North Korean style’ classical literature is as much complicated as discussing contemporary literature of North Korea. There would be no room for regarding, from South Korean point of view, the ‘modernized’ classical literature of North Korea as literary diversity. It is because the classical literature is existing and functioning as the prototype representing North Korea’s official standpoints, from which various genres of literary works originated and shaped. However, devaluating the North Korean classical literature as ‘monolithic’ would not be appropriate, because it can be positively appreciated for its worth as a modern transmission in terms of that it is reflecting modern senses without much losing its classical attributes. Above all, the most important thing is that the studies on North Korean literature should start from recognizing the fact that North Korean arts and culture are deeply rooted in their political and social backgrounds and understanding its basic principles and fundamental mechanisms. The current efforts to compile an unified historiography on North and South Korean literature could come to a mutual agreement when they base on this recognition and understanding.
