The purpose of this study was to investigate actual conditions of gymnastic education in Hansung Government Normal School which was the only normal school at the end of the Korean empire. The actual conditions have not been investigated in the previous studies of a lack of historical materials. Therefore, the present study investigated the actual conditions of gymnastic education in Hansung Government Normal School by using historical materials which exist in Japan. As the results of the present study, the following facts were proved. 1. The gymnastics was stipulated as a course in the school curriculum of Hansung Normal School which was established in 1895. However, it was nat until 1906 that the gymnastics education was implemented. 2. After the promulgation of Teachers School Act in September, 1906, a Japanese professional gymnastic instructor, Kantarou Maeda, implemented the gymnastic education in the school. 3. Kantarou Maeda, who had graduated from Tokyo Higher Normal School in Japan, instructed Korean teachers of government or public elementary school in gymnastics. 4. The textbook titled as General Education indicated that the gymnastic education should be conducted on the three stages teaching method : preparation, instruction and training.
