This study examines the characteristics of Kim-eok’s translation which is fit to Korean feeling, through viewing his creative poetic transforming original contents, selecting poetry to translate, and expressing Korean mood in 『the lost pearls』. Furthermore, the development of his creating poetry from folk song style to modern poetry style is examined. He translated Western poetry to get the form and the style of Korean modern poetry. It was his ‘creative translation of poetry’ that resulted from his endeavor. That is to say, his creative translation of the Western poetry is the ‘independent acceptance of the western poetry’ as ‘direct translation’ but also the ‘creation’ of Korean modern poetic form.
He mainly selected verses of ‘romantic love song’ from the anthology of Arthur Symons and translated them. He made a title for that book as “the lost pearls” to make it accord with the contents of those verses. In addition, he considered the sequence of poetry in editing『azalea』. He arranged Kim Sowol’s sorrowful poetry which show traditional folk song tune and Chinese character phrases at the latter part, and modern style poetry at the former part of『azalea』. It is his characteristic of creative translation but also that of the Korean modern poetic form which he aimed for. He highlighted the themes of ‘romantic love song’ which has ‘dream’ and ‘sorrow’ as main poetic feeling in 『the lost pearls』 and 『azalea』. Considering entire structure, he also formed lines and stanzas, and used the technique of ‘repetition’, ‘modulation’ and ‘omission’ in countering phrases and countering lines. Furthermore, he usually used ‘eora/seora’ which is suitable to romantic verses and aimed for Korean colloquial style by using a rhyme of countering lines. Kim Sowol’s poetry can be come in to the world as a distinguished model of ‘modernized folk poetry bur also free verse’ through Kim-eok’s guidance, selection and revision although his poetry started from folk songs.
