This paper has closely examined what syntactic functions and meanings ‘hodo’ in Japanese and ‘mankeum’ in Korean possess in sentences. Besides, their syntactic and semantic similarities and differences have been studied based on whether the two morphemes have their identical syntactic functions and semantic scopes. This study has shown that both morphemes do not own a single function, but various syntactic functions. It has been shown that they have the function of ‘hukujoji’ as their common functions, only ‘hodo’ in Japanese possesses the functions of ‘noun’ and ‘suffix’, and only ‘mankeum’ in Korean owns the function of delimitative particles. This examination has presented that the basic meaning containing all the various syntactic functions of ‘hodo’ in Japanese and ‘mankeum’ in
Korean is ‘identical degree’, and could be differentiated into various contextual meanings in various contexts. This study has found that their common meanings are ‘identical degree, degree of intense, the most degree, the least degree, proportion’, the meanings of only ‘hodo’ are ‘time and degree, approximate numbers and quantities’, and those of only ‘mankeum’ are ‘limit, degree corresponding to the quantity, degree corresponding to the preceding description, reason, emphasis’.
