In the roman history, the importance of principate is the development from the city??state system to the empire system that overcome the limit of the roman republic. Many scholars focused on the power relationship between Augustus who was the institutor of the principate and the senate which was the representation of the roman republic. It has been estimated as the dyarchy, the monarchy, the republic, and the disguised monarchy depending on the method of study. The authority of the senate was lost and its function in the government operation was intimidated through the civil war and political disorder from B.C. 133 to B.C. 30. To correct it, Augustus practiced the reorganization of the senate, and the number of senators which increased over 1,000 in the time of civil war was decreased as 600 through three times of lectio senatus. Augustus’lectio senatus is the arbitrary power that was able to search out and purge peoples who unqualified as senators.
The superiority of Augustus in the power relationship between Augustus and the senate attained a height through the foundation of consilium principis. The purpose of this institution tried to invigorate the subject of discussion by selecting the agenda that is going to discuss in the senate but Augustus tried to grasp the trend of the senate. In A.D.13 Augustus reorganized Consilium Principis, and its decision subject was equal to Senatus Consulta. Ultimately, this reorganization made the existence of the senate the nomina body. Therefore, the senate’s status in the Augustan age was the relationship that the body of 600 senators obeyed one person who seized the power for the government operation of roman empire. To conclude, the senate in the principate carried out a role as an assisting agency that approved the power exercise of princeps. Moreover, the increasing of power meaned that the roman society was a fundamental factor proceeding to the system of emperor.
