Report Errors
Focusing on opinion diversity, this research explored how various opinions were revealed in a variety of news media, including newspaper, TV, news agency, and internet news media, and what the news media"s ideological positions were in reporting a controversial "economic democracy" issue in Korea. Opinion diversity was measured in two dimensions, between-media and within-media. In terms of internal diversity perspective (within-media), we examined how various opinions were allowed within each media. Also, ideological positions of individual media were analyzed to depict the ideological geography of the news media environment from an external diversity (between-media) viewpoint. Findings showed that news media in general had a similar level of internal opinion diversity but apparently dispersed in different ideological positions in terms of external opinion diversity. With the comparison of opinion diversity at the multi-levels of individual media, media type, and the whole media, we discussed a matter of putting news diversity into practice and proposed further studies of relationship between opinion diversity of the news media and public opinion diversity.
