The aim of this paper is to throw light on the criterion of meanings in Wittgenstein’s philosophy. I begin with talk of the criterion of meanings in Frege and Russell. Then, I look into the criterion of meanings in earlier and later Wittgenstein. In earlier Wittgenstein, the key issue is to see whether language corresponds to the world. For, he claims that our language is a picture to mirror the world. However, later Wittgenstein criticizes that his own earlier theory of meaning in that the earlier ignores the various sorts and functions of languages. Thus, later Wittgenstein asserts that the meaning of language depends on its use in the language. Therefore, I will assert that the change of Wittgenstein’s the criterion of meanings of language comes out of the different perspectives between the earlier and later periods.
