In this study, we distinguished between single households and multi-member households, and investigated what influences subjective consumer competency have on the feeling of insecurity for food consumption and the consumer satisfaction in food. Through the review of preceding studies, we examined previous studies on the consumer competency, the feeling of insecurity for food and the consumer satisfaction in food, through which we set up the subjects of inquiry. We used ‘2013 Consumption Life Indicators in Korea’ for the study data, while we analyzed the inquiry subjects for the 1,500 specimens of people 20 years of age or older, employing SPSS 21.0 and Amos 21.0. Furthermore, we conducted a focus group interview(FGI) for the subjects of the adult consumers of single households, for the in-depth result analysis, while applying network analysis to the feeling of insecurity for food consumption, so as to visibly grasp its meaning.
The study result shows that for the consumers of single households, subjective consumer competency has meaningful influences on the feeling of insecurity for the domestic and imported agricultural, marine and livestock products, while no meaningful influences of them were found on the consumer satisfaction in food. For the consumers of multi-member households, however, subjective consumer competency exert meaningful influences on the feeling of insecurity for the domestic and imported agricultural, marine and livestock products, frozen, instant and processed food, and fresh food. And it was confirmed that the consumers competency have direct influences on the consumer satisfaction in food, while they also have indirect influences on it through the feeling of insecurity for the domestic agricultural, marine and livestock products. In addition, we conducted FGI for the consumers of single households, in which most of the participants chose frozen, instant and processed food as the food consumed the most in their daily food consumption, while they did not reveal any negative perceptions for these kinds of food.
Through the study, we could draw fruitful study result through quantitative and qualitative analyses for the consumers of single households. We think the result will be able to help the food safety policies and administration in the future, as we have empirically analyzed the perceptions of the consumers on the food safety in our society.
