The purpose of this study was to examine the applicability of image training to teaching of physical education class by analyzing its effect on the learning of straddle jump on the horse vault. Forty four middle school girls participated in the experiment as subjects, and were randomly assigned to one of the four practice groups, physical practice(PP), mental practice(MP), physical and mental practice(PMP), and control. after the pretest on straddle jump on the horse vault, subjects practiced the skill either physically, mentally or both physically and mentally for 10 days before the posttest. The straddle jump on the horse vault skill was divided into 4 phases, stepping on the springboard, the first flight, the second flight, and landing, and two-way ANOVA(4 group x 2 session)s with repeated measures on the last factor were performed on the total score and the scores for individual phases Analysis on the total score revealed that all groups except the control improved from the pretest to the posttest, with the PMP group displaying the highest score in the posttest. In the analysis on the scores of stepping on the springboard and the first flight, the main effect of only session was found to be significant, all groups improving from the pretest to posttest. In the analysis on the scores of the second flight and landing, the interaction between group and session was shown to be significant. Subsequent tests for the interaction revealed that while the MP and PMP groups displayed a significant improvement from the pretest to posttest for the second flight score, the PP and PMP groups improved significantly from the pretest to posttest for the landing score. These results suggest that while the image training is effective for the learning of straddle jump on the horse vault, its effect can differ according to the characteristics of motor task. Therefore, when the image training is to be used in practical situation, its applicability to the motor task to be learned should be examined first.
