The aim of this paper is to explain the reason and effect of the modernization of Japanese martial art though the prism of western culture. At the end of 19th century, two facts change particularities of Japanese martial art: be opening of the century under the pressure of westem gunboat, and following lost of thrust into the traditional cast of warriors, samourai is not able anymore to protect the country against foreign powers. Those two facts pushed Japanese martial art into the way of modernization : from a need of adaptation of the martial art to the modernizing society, to need from the changing society of martial values. The main examples will be taken from judo and karate ' both had to loose their traditional and conservative specifics to reach a larger audience ' they changed in terms of accessibility, they became less complex and more general. To reach the largest public as possible they became a sport. This movement was amplified by the integration of judo and karate into the Public Education System The Japanese authorities used the martial art to strengthen the militarization of the country. The example of G. Funakoshi who spent his life making of karate a national thing is interesting. from a local practice he a world known sport. Karate is seen the example of modernization which brought to a world development.
