This study investigates the inducible HSP72 and GRP78 expression in cardiac, soleus and plantaris of the rat following 48hr fasting and swimming exercise. 16 male Sprague-Dawley rats were employed for the this study. the exhausitive swimming exercise in rats were performed untill exhaustion. In the heart and soleus muscle sampled, the greatest accumulation of HSP72 was observed in the swimming exercise combined with 48hr fasting conditions whereas the greatest accumulation of HSP72 was observed in plantaris muscle in the swimming exercise condition. GRP78 is strongly expressed within the heart, plantaris amd soleus muscle in responce to 48hr fasting, swimming exercise and fasting & swimming exercise. Thus, the exercise stress and metabolic stress (fasting) caused increased GRP78 and HSP72 in all three tissues. but, both the level of GRP78 and HSP72 in all three tissues in responce to exercise stress and metabolic stress (fasting) were some different in a tissue-specofic manner. These data indicate that the swimming exercise combined with 48hr fasting conditions increase GRP78 and HSP72 accumulation in locomotor muscles such as heart and soleus muscle and plantaris muscle. In addition, fasting other than exercise may contribute to the increases in GRP78 and HSP72 levels.
