The purpose of this experiment was to compare the physiological response and muscle fatigue in obese women to walking and running at several equivalent speeds. Subjects in this experiment are Fifteen obese women(mean±SD, age; 26.7±0.3yrs, body fat; 31.3±0.7). The walking protocol consisted of treadmill walking for five min at each of the following speeds: 3.0, 4.5, 6, 7 and 7.5 km·hr^-1 and treadmill jogging for five min at each of the following speeds: 6, 7 and 7.5 km·hr^-1. The rate of oxygen consumption, energy expenditure and plasma lactate concentration were significantly higher during walking compared to jogging at treadmill speeds ≥7.5km·hr^-1. Heart rates and respiratory exchange ratio were significantly higher at treadmill speeds ≥7.0km·hr^-1 during walking as compared to jogging. As an indicator of muscle fatigue, mean power frequency(MPF) during walking was significantly decreased, but not during running. These findings demonstrated that walking at speeds ≥6.5km·hr^-1 resulted in rates of energy expenditure that were as high or higher than jogging at the same speeds even though the relative stress was greater during walling. Therefore fast walking can helpful in expending as much or more energy than slow running in obese women.
