The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of L-Carnitine acute administration on the metabolic responses, venous blood gases and exercise performance. L-Carnitine treated groups were given L-Carnitine(β-hydroxy-γ-[trimethylammonia]- butyrate, 3g ; Vitamin BT. SIGMA, USA) by oral intake and Placebo groups for control received by the same method. Blood samples during exercise were taken all five times(Pre-ingestion, Pre-exercise, Post-exercise, Recovery phase 2 min, Recovery phase 15 min) and analyzed for various blood parameters(lactate, NH_3, pH, pO_2, pCO_2,) and analyzed RER, peakVO_2 and all out time. Significance of difference was determined by paired t-test and 2-way repeated ANOVA with Fisher`s pairwise comparisons using SPSS version 10.0. p<.05 was considered significant. The obtained results are as follows: 1. In the reaction of blood energy metabolism, the reaction of lactate, RER, NH3 were no significant differences between L-Carnitine Group and Placebo Group. But, There was significant change in two groups according to duration. There was increased significantly after maximal exercise compared to before exercise and rapidly decreased in the recovery phase. 2. In the reaction of blood gases, the reaction of blood pH, pO_2, pCO_2 value were no significant differences between L-Carnitine group and placebo group. But, There was significant change in two groups according to duration. The value of pH and pCO_2 was significantly decreased after maximal exercise compared to before exercise and rapidly increased in the recovery phase. But, that in contrast to, pO_2 was significantly increased after maximal exercise compared to before exercise and rapidly decreased in the recovery phase. 3. In the reaction of performance, the reaction of peakVO_2 and All out time were no significant differences between L-Carnitine group and placebo group. In conclusion, these results indicate that L-Carnitine acute administration does not provide an ergogenic effects to exercise performance. Because there was not Fatty acid oxidation increases in response to exercise. Additional clinical trials integrating assessments blood analysis by I. V. Catheter and glycogen contents analysis by muscle tissue analyzer according to ingestion time, duration, capacity, and physiology change in exercise types are needed to definitively clarify any effects of L-Carnitine on exercise performance.
