This study examines the influence of a 6-week core stability exercise program using Swiss Ball on muscle thickness, maximum muscular strength, and pain in the trunk region of participants with low back pain. A total of 20 male college students in their twenties were divided into two groups: Swiss Ball (n=10) and Mat (n=10). Measurements were taken prior to starting the exercise program and after completing the program at the 8-week period using SONOACE 6000C ultrasound equipment to measure muscle thickness, PEGASUS to measure muscular strength, and VAS to measure pain reduction. Comparisons were made using paired t-test and independent t-test with a level of significance determined at .05 on SPSS 15.0 version. There were statistically significant effects for muscle thickness in a between-group comparison for the left transverse abdominis muscle and left and right multifidus muscles. Each group showed significant improvements in muscle thickness in a within-group comparison for the thickness of left and right transverse abdominis muscle and left and right multifidus muscle. There were statistically significant effects in maximum muscular strength in a between-group comparison for isometric maximal strength of flexion and extension. Each group showed significant improvement in isometric maximal strength in a within-group comparison for flexion, extension and rotation. Each group showed a significant improvement in pain reduction in a within-group comparison for pain. We found that using Swiss Ball was helpful in improving muscle thickness, maximizing muscular strength and pain reduction when used in a core stability exercise program.
