This is an article written aiming to explain the philosophy of KIM BangGeol(芝村 金邦杰, 1623~1695). Just because it is difficult to explain the whole of his philosophy as a lack of data, this mainly deals with his Yesong(禮訟, Controversy about the Confucian funerary ritual).
His life was related with this Controversy in the mid Chosun Dynasty. His official life was with its beginning and ending.
King Hyeonjong, the 18th king of the Chosun Dynasty, reigned for 15 years. During his reign, he underwent two political incidents named the Controversy about the Confucian funerary rituals. Although it started out as a trivial dispute about which mourning dress did the Queen Dowager Ja-eui(stepmother of King Hyojong, Hyeonjong’s father) put on, it advanced to a political incident concerning the acknowledgement of King Hyeonjong’s legitimacy and political pride of the king and the vassals. The Controversy became a serious political conflict between the party of Namin(南人) and the party of Seoin(西人). SONG SiYeol(宋時烈), the leader of Seoin(西人), and HEO Mok(許穆), the leader of Namin(南人), who led the controversy all agreed a funeral ceremony according to kinship. But there were disagreements about the funeral proceedings.
KIM BangGeol stood at the forefront to eradicate SONG SiYeol and his faction. He made a manifestation of political views based on the theory of the party of Namin. Based on the theory of Heo Mok and Yun Hyu etc. who had preached through the 1st and 2nd Controversy, he played an important role in helping to eradicate the opposition.
