Report Errors

The purpose of this paper is to explore storytelling and its meanings in picturebooks about war. For this study, 35 picturebooks were analyzed.
The results of analysis were as follows:
The authors clarify a role as a storyteller through author’s note attached in their own picturebook. The author’s note says that the author adjusts the gaps between the child reader and the terrible war story as a source of her picturebook about war.
Even though many aspects of war such as its cause, fight scene, and way of end are described very briefly or unmentioned, the authors deal with the subject of war very closely and make the reader try the making the meaning of war in various viewpoints. War represented without cause, the fantastic ways of its end, in a sense, may be considered as a author’s passive strategy of storytelling considering the children with cognitive limits. It may be interpreted rather as an active manifestation of war from a different point of view.

본 연구는 35권의 전쟁 그림책의 스토리텔링을 분석하였다. 그림책 작가들은 전쟁이야기를 어떤 방식으로 전달하는지, 그리고 그 전달방식이 갖는 의미는 무엇인지 고찰하였다. 분석결과 전쟁 그림책 작가들은 ‘작가의 말’을 통해 전쟁 ‘이야기 전달자’로서의 위상을 명시적으로 드러내는 한편, 전쟁 이야기와 아동 독자(청자)의 거리를 조절하고 있음을 할 수 있었다. 또 전쟁 이야기가 가공의 이야기로 전달되는 과정에서 드러난 전쟁의 양상을 전쟁의 원인과 전쟁 장면, 전쟁의 종결로 나누어 분석해본 결과, 그림책 작가들은 어린 독자들의 눈높이를 고려하여 전쟁이라는 무거운 이야기를 다양한 방식으로 보여주고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 작가의 글이나, 색의 분명한 대비와 같이 때로는 매우 명시적인 방식으로, 그리고 또 때로는 직접적인 언급대신 공백으로 처리하거나, 곰인형이나 고양이와 같은 제한된 관점을 통해 전쟁 이야기를 전달하였다. 그러나 특히 주목할 내용은 전쟁 그림책이, 비록 인지적 한계를 가진 어린 독자를 겨냥하고 있다 하더라도, 전쟁과 관련된 제반 문제를 비교적 빠짐없이 천착하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 다양한 관점에서 해석해보게 한다는 점이다. 전쟁의 원인 및 전쟁 장면에 대한 언급이 없다는 점과 실제 현실과는 동떨어진 방법으로 전쟁을 종결짓고 평화를 가져오는 결말 등은 얼핏 보면 어린 독자를 고려하여, 어려운 문제를 피해가기 위한 작가의 소극적 전략처럼 여겨질 수도 있으나, 오히려 전쟁의 터무니없음을 고발하는 보다 적극적인 의견 표명으로도 해석될 수 있음을 알 수 있었다.
