Man-made disasters occur a lot more frequently than natural disasters today. As the vulnerability of super-tall apartment buildings to fires has been repeatedly revealed by press reports, it is a matter of concern to residents as well as construction companies which have aggressively concentrated on high-rise housing-commercial complexes. Fires which occurred for the last 5 years were analyzed. The analysis shows that although the number of fires declined, casualties and property damage caused by fires increased by 10.9% and 21.9%, respectively. It means large-scale fires increasingly occurred. The report made by the Korea Fire Protection Association on the 33,612 Specific Buildings in 2013 shows that 1,858 fires occurred, causing KW 31.2 billion in property damage. The largest number of fires occurred in apartment buildings and the property damage to factories covered 83% (KW 25.8 billion). As many of old apartment buildings have been reconstructed into taller buildings and the demand for high-rise buildings has increased, fires in tall buildings have also increased year by year. The purpose of this study is to review the fire safety status of high-rise buildings and analyze the changes in fire-related laws and design standards in order to spot and fix problems. The increase of complex and largescale super-tall buildings is a global trend today. Supertall buildings are the emblem of a country and represent its culture. A fire in a super-tall building causes considerable loss of lives and property and damages the country’s international prestige. In order to prevent fires in super-tall buildings, it is required to ensure rational design to protect human lives and property, remove the possible causes of fires in fire protection compartments, establish fully-automated fire extinguishing system and place fire detectors and extinguishers in all of fire protection compartments to provide immediate response.
