In this essay the present writer attempts to illustrate on the one hand how the ancient Israelites understood themselves and the world in which they were living, and on the other hand how such ideas which are found in the primeval history are typical of Deuteronomistic history. The scope of the research will be focused on the primeval history in the Old Testament. In the first chapter, the writer attempts to illustrate how the ancient Israelites understood their history. As shown in the schematized history table the writer puts forward the argument that their history in their thought is not linear but rather processional, repeating the process of the formula of promise and fulfillment In the second chapter, the writer expounds their cosmogony. It shows that they thought their cosmogony consisted of three dimensions : the sky, the earth, and the water under the earth. This three-dimensional cosmogony turns up also in the Ark structure (Gen. 6 : 16) and the Temple building (Ⅰ Kgs. 6 : 6). In the third chapter, the writer tries to grasp the ancient Israelites` concept of the human being. So far, Old Testament scholars have tried to explain that the image of God has to do with the authority of human being to rule over the creatures. However, the writer argues that the author of the expanded Deuteronomistic work(Genesis to Ⅱ Kings) will have understood that human beings were created in the blood of God after Babylonian myths, so that they would have understood human beings to be almost the same as angels or God himself. In the fourth chapter, the writer demonstrates that the author of the primary history understood women to be more important in initiating the decision to open a new history than men. The same understanding is seen in the New Testament, with women`s initiating power and Jesus as the offspring of a woman. In the fifth chapter, the writer deals with Ancient Israelites` view of paradise. The present writer maintains that the author of the primary history thought of paradise as a place where the human being can find rest only by working as hard as slaves, keeping or defending their own garden. In conclusion, the writer summarizes that the author of the primary history understood the humanbeing as having a bright prospect and the capacity to be like angels, and women as having the initiative power to open new chapters of history.
