Clifford Geertz, author of Interpretation of CuItures, has been a foremost theorist who defined key terms and methodologies in cultural anthropology. His "interpretive anthropology" provides ample room to contemplate how mission scholars deal with cultural interactions between Christianity and other religious orientations at cross-cultural mission fields. One of the most significant achievements by Geertz in the study of culture is that he proposed ways in which how cultural anthropologists "interpret" other cultures. He argues that all ethnographical writings should be written by "thick description." In the paper, I intend to introduce the key terms and methodologies of Geertz. including "thick description." from historical and theoretical perspectives. The main purpose of the paper is to apply Geertz`s ways of "interpreting" other cultures to mission scholars` interpretation of other cultures, from missiological perspectives. This paper, therefore, aims to find a way of interdisciplinary collaboration between modern cultural anthropology and mission studies. I argue that Geertz `s terms and methodologies could provide valuable perspectives for mission scholars to apply when "interpreting" other cultures, which is one of their academic responsibilities. Geertz s temis and methodologies could be particularly helpful to mission scholars by encouraging them to pay extra attention to "inter-subjective" cultural tr:ansfonnations within missionary encounters with other religious orientations. Further, I argue that Geertz s terms and methodologies bear some limitations when applied to mission studies. These limitations include his lack of interest in the issue of "power and "religious and cultural transformation" in cross-cultural missionary encounters.
