Within the constant recession in Japan, the people are paying attention to the economic policy of Abe’s government that was newly established from December 16th, 2012. Abenomics’ three key points are 1) Decisive financial policy, 2) Prompt financial policy, and 3) Growth strategies to induce private investment. In order to promote them, he built Economic Revitalization Headquarters under the METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) and both Economic & Financial Advisory Council and Industrial Competitiveness Council under the headquarters. Having these as its background, the government is trying to escape from the deflation (constant fall in prices) as well as the strong yen.
In the midst of enforcing two contrastive policies for the turnaround in the economy and consumption tax rise, they are showing keen interest in social welfare more and more. One of the major issues regarding social welfare is an increase of the burden for social security expenditure, but because of the institutional revision to reduce the amount paid, the people are showing keen interest in who would be engaged in the financial operation of the national health insurance or how the finances collected will be used.
Either solving the social welfare issues or increasing the consumption tax rate up to 8% is being a testing bench to Abenomics. So far, domestic support for Abenomics in Japan has been quite favorable. But the problem is how it will be going. The relationship between China and Japan is getting more serious because of the establishment of an air defense identification zone and Senkaku Islands, and the relationship between Korea and Japan cannot be worse for the Dokdo or comfort women issues.
Accordingly, this study is going to examine Abenomics’ economic policy and social welfare issues that have been going on.
