This article studies Park In-Whan"s "self-consciousness" which is connected with his national "self-consciousness" caused by experiencing Western civilization and westerners in the American journey, and the influences that have an effect on his latter period"s poetry. His poetry about American journey has characteristics that it shows a "mental dissociation" caused by experiencing advanced civilization, significantly different from the falling behind realities of Korea in 1950s. This "mental dissociation" is not the same emotion, such as anxiety and fear in the former period"s poetry influenced by Korean war. It occurs through his consciousness of civilized society, which he described as "a neon avenue", and the awareness of Korean war and Koreans including himself from the westerner"s point of view.
Such an inner aspect occurred complexly in his consciousness is related with his "self-consciousness" or "national self-consciousness". In other words, his “American poetry(poems written from the experience of American journey)” shows inner confusion, obsession and self dissociation. These occurs as the result of the "self-consciousness" and the "surplus of self-consciousness", which occur when the image of oneself is different from what he have imagined and wants. The concrete sign of those characteristics is the motive of the undersized figure or voice of a poetic ego, or the will of escape from reality to somewhere. This motive is sometimes combined with the critical view on Western civilization. Especially the poetry written on the ship, returning to Korea from America, are at the top of the "surplus of self-consciousness".
His latter period"s poetry written after the American journey shows the aspect of considerably changed from his former period"s poetry which shows the endeavor of escape from exhaustion. Namely he shows the type of an "Apollonian" who foresights ominous future and a "mental emperor" who gives a wide birth to reality. Nonetheless, he shows consistent poetic ethos from the former period to the latter period. He looked squarely the reality and the hidden side of it, perceived people"s pain and hope, and simultaneously tried to write poetry to express "mental dissociation", having the sense of duty as a poet.
