The purpose of this study is to analyze representation of the father found in Ha Geun-chan’s novels and understand the principle of composing the narrative of national suffering. Although the narrative of national suffering is intended to construct national identity, it gets split in that process.
Ha Geun-chan’s novels show us father representation in many ways. In his early works, 「The Suffering of Two Generations」 and 「White Paper Mustache」, the father has a ‘damaged body’. The two works provide temporality to the scars of the war and become extended to the narrative of national suffering.
There is also a work that reproduces the father’s death which the author actually experienced during the Korean War. 『Yaho (夜壺)』 is a work that reproduces the father’s death from the context of the narrative of woman’s suffering. The narrative of woman’s suffering is intended to construct national identity with the stories of the heroine’s suffering in the world where paternity is lost. However, the heroine’s misery is combined with national suffering coincidently, so national identity fails to be constructed in an integrated way.
After the 1970’s, Ha Geun-chan’s novels were intended to restore paternity as he was recalling memories in his childhood during our colonization. In these works, the father is in discord with the colonial system, and in this process, the father is restored as an element that constructs national identity. For this, the works add the eye of the national subject, but as the eye of the national subject is heterogeneous from that of childhood, it is impossible to avoid the division of national identity.
