This study examined the “issues of Imna (任那)” which emerged after the fall of Imna. Existing studies have focused on the “Tribute of Imna (任那の調)”. However, for the “issues of Imna”, which were not based on real history, the relevant issues should be dealt with comprehensively, including the events of dispatching “Imna envoy (任那使)” and sending a military force, in addition to the “Tribute of Imna”.
This paper aimed to make it clear that the issues of Imna are neither mere symbolic issues nor realistic relations with the Korean Peninsula, but are directly related to the royal family of the Yamato Dynasty. From the establishment of the “Tribute of Imna” to its abolishment, the “issues of Imna” emerged during the rule of each Japanese emperor, exhibiting certain regularity. This indicates that the “issues of Imna” were closely related to succession to the great king"s throne in the Yamato Dynasty. Therefore, the Yamato Dynasty attempted to show off the royal authority of the great king, who was the king of Jebeon (諸蕃), through a so-called ceremonial revival of Imna by having “Imnasa” visit from Silla and performing the “Tribute of Imna”, which was a ritual of donation to the palace, in the royal court of the Yamato Dynasty. This policy to revive Imna was formed in the sixth century and was intensively promoted until the seventh century. This was established as a principle for succession to the great king"s throne, which the great kings in the line of Heummyeong (欽明係) were obliged to adhere to. After the Taika Reform by which the change from the great king to the emperor had been made, this policy lost its characteristic as a principle for succession to the great king"s throne. As least in the sixth century, the Yamato Dynasty perceived Imna (or Geumgwan Gaya) as “Miyake (屯倉)”. For this reason, the region"s revival was the most important task for the great king"s royal family and was a huge project that had to be carried over from the great king to the crown prince. As this shows, the great kings in the line of Heummyeong during the sixth century endeavored to seize power in Bumin (部民) and Dunchang (屯倉: Miyake), and Bumin and Dunchang were expanded into their symbolic meanings that the great king"s royal family had to carry beyond their realistic meanings. This led to the emergence of the perception that “Imna equals Dunchang (Miyake)”, and the perception came to lose its driving force as a principle for succession to the throne along with the effective abolishment of Bu (部) and Dunchang (屯倉).
