The unique feature of Zhang Dai’s prose is writing about ‘people’. His prose gives a fascinating insight into character of various social classes in Man Ming period. His observations and descriptions are very detailed, and he always put efforts on revealing the true face of the figures.
Zhang Dai was inspired by the trend of enlightenment, noticed the values of humanity, observed carefully the traits or defects of human, and watched subtly the majority or minority in the society.
Even though Zhang Dai is well-known for Xiao pin wen, actually he is versatile in many fields, especially in the field of history. This essay will focus on how Zhang Dai treats people and observes people and evaluates people in his prose. And especially emphasize on how zhang dai’s historical philosophy influences his view of people and reflects on his writing.
