A 7-day national funeral was held for the death of former President Roh Moo-Hyun in May, 2009. Voluntary funeral rites were progressed as 49Jae(齋) within a broad national sympathy after the funeral. This Buddhist Chundojae(薦度齋) called as 49Jae(齋) played an important role for the former president`s nation-led death rite to be continued as funeral rites led by the public. It is considered that the 49Jae(齋) being settled as a Buddhist rite and also as a larger concept as a traditional rite, is deeply related not only to historicity but also to characteristics and social context of the rite. The following are footholds of this 49Jae(齋). First of all, it is based on multi-religious complexity which is deeply connected to the death rites and rite functions of Confucianism and shamanism that have formed the basis of Korean culture. Second, due to changes in death rites such as `100-day Expiration of Mourning` being replaced with `Samwoojae(三虞祭) Expiration of Mourning` and the social base of `Neokgut(exorcism for comforting a victimized soul)` which has been responsible for `Haewon(解寃: satisfying one`s grudge)` is weakened, Chundojae is carrying out their functions in combination. Third, the rite structure of 7·7 Jae which is held 7 times every 7 days after one`s death, is to send the deceased through stable sublimation of the remainders by gradual process and periodical publicizing. Fourth, the Catholic Church accepted the 49Jae(齋) as a traditional rite. A 49-day Mass is held during the commemorating period of the deceased, which secures traditionality that transcends religion. `The 49-day Expiration of Mourning` including the 49Jae(齋) would play a certain role as a voluntary Expiration of Mourning rite of a national or social death in the future. Therefore, there is a need to change the existing formalities which enshrine the departed spirit at one place and hold the 49Jae(齋). The possibility of an open rite with community members who sympathize with the rite voluntarily organizing and participating, centered on the capital area and hometown should be searched for a publicized commemoration of the deceased as you can see in this case. In order to leave Chundojae including 49Jae(齋) as a genuine community rite, it should not be affected by expansion of Buddhist influence or political purposes. The purity of values pursued through the rites and equality of Chundojae subjects are required. Since values realized through rituals are more important than the rite itself, clear establishment of the direction that Buddhist rites should pursue for curing social issues must be done urgently.
